The Festa del Redentore in Venice has a rich history that dates back to the 16th century.

The festival was first held in 1577 to celebrate the end of the terrible plague that had ravaged the city for over two years.

The Doge of Venice, Alvise I Mocenigo, vowed to build a beautiful church dedicated to Christ the Redeemer if the city was spared from the plague. The church was designed by the great architect Andrea Palladio.

When the plague finally ended, the church of Redentore was built on the island of Giudecca, and the festival was born.

Today, the Festa del Redentore is celebrated with a series of events that take place over the course of the third Sunday of July. It includes festivals and religious events both.

The festivities begin when a pontoon bridge is built across the Giudecca Canal, connecting the Giudecca island with the rest of Venice. This bridge allows thousands of people to walk across the canal and attend a special mass at the church of Il Redentore.

Then, on Saturday evening, a massive fleet of boats gathers in the St Mark's basin area to watch the spectacular fireworks display.

It's one of the most scenic moments of the calendar!
